Using Quotation Marks with Titles

student asking the teacher a question

Use quotation marks around the titles of short works. Short works include short stories, songs, poems, episodes, chapters, and other parts of long works.

Song: "On Top of the World"

Story: "A Christmas Carol"

Poem: "The Owl and the Pussy-Cat"

Remember to capitalize the first and last words in a title and all words in between except a, an, the, and, but, or, and short prepositions like in or of.

Also, remember that a comma or period after a title goes inside the quotation marks, but a question mark or exclamation point goes outside (unless it belongs to the title).
