Using Active Verbs

An active verb tells what the subject of the sentence is doing.

Mr. Gavin directed the Greenfield Middle School Band.

       (The verb directed tells what Mr. Gavin did.)

A passive verb tells what is happening to the subject.

The Greenfield Middle School Band was directed by Mr. Gavin.

       (The verb was directed tells what happened to the Greenfield Middle School Band.)
