Understanding Connotation

kid with a hiking backpack

Think of all the ways you can walk.

Beth hiked up the mountain.

Darius marched ahead of her.

James straggled behind.

(Hike means to walk for distance in wild places. March means to walk like a soldier. Straggle means to follow along slowly. )

All three words mean "walk," but they have different shades of meaning, or connotations.
